Sinusitis refers to an inflammation of the mucosal lining of the paranasal sinuses. The maxillary sinus is the most commonly affected. It can be due to various causes like infections of the upper respiratory tract by viruses and bacteria, direct trauma to the sinuses, swimming in infected waters, a block in the ostia of the sinuses leading to stagnation of secretions in the sinus or due to extension of infection from an infected tooth. The common bacteria responsible are Staphylococci, Streptococci, Pneumococci, Klebsiella etc. The disease manifests as acute pain over the surface of the sinus with constitutional symptoms like fever, malaise and body ache. Nasal discharge and postnasal discharge are also present. The diagnosis can be made by X-ray examination of head. CT scan is more helpful. Once diagnosed, the disease is first managed conservatively using antibiotics like amoxicillin and erythromycin.
