1. Brush your teeth twice: This is the first law of dental hygiene. Brushing your teeth is of overbearing importance to dental hygiene. You should brush your teeth twice daily by preference in the morning and just before sleeping. It is also very important to brush teeth in a right way. Incorrect brushing is as good as not brushing. So, make sure you learn how to accurately brush your teeth and be consistent with it.
2. Floss you teeth: Brushing simply reaches two-thirds of the teeth surface area. The remaining one third is left unclean. Flossing cleans the remaining one third of the teeth. Itprecisely removes the food fragments caught in between the teeth. Food debris acts as harbor for bacterial development and hence removing it is essential to prevent microbial prosperity. Hence, flossing plays a very important role in preventing microbial growth.
3. Drink lots of water: Spit is an unacquired anti-microbial agent. Drinking lots of water promotes salivation which helps check microbial development.
4. Do not snack in between meals: Snacking in between meals is a very bad habit for dental hygiene. Snacking increases the acidic degree in the mouth which becomes helpful for bacterial growth. Hence, avoid snacking in between meals.
5. Chew sugar-free gum: Sugar free chewing gum promotes salivary production which acts as an antibacterial agent. It controls the microbial growth in the mouth. It also contains xylitol which fights tooth decay. Besides this, chewing gum ensures fresh breath.
6. Avoid junk food: Eat a balanced daily intake of food with plenty of veggies, meat and carbs. Junk food is bad for dental hygiene. Hence, be away from junk food.
7. Say no to piercings: Body art is good as long as it’s out of the oral cavity. Tongue piercings can become a source of contamination. It can also cause nerve damage and acts as an irritant to the oral cavity.
8. Regular visits to dentist: The dentist is a qualified person who can detect problems in their beginning stages and treat them. Early identification of dental problems means that there is early cure which prevents the problem from increasing further. Also, the more advance a dental issue becomes, more intensive the treatment is and you will end up paying more for it.
9. Kick the butt: Habitual smoking is a killer for dental health. Apart from having detrimental affects on the body, habitual smoking has a great impact on the oral cavity. The most noticeable of these is the foul odor coming out of the mouth which is also known as smoker’s breath. The smoke contents deposit on the teeth surface forming hard deposits which need to be removed by dental scaling. Smoking also increases risk for oral cancer.
10. Use a mouth wash: Using a mouth wash ensures fresh breath. Include it in your dental hygiene regimen.

It is also referred to as tooth decay. It is widely prevalent throughout the world. It can affect individuals of all age groups. The disease can affect both the crowns and the roots of teeth. Dental caries is caused by two organisms- streptococcus mutans and lactobacilli. These acid producing bacteria, in the presence of fermentable carbohydrates, enhance the demineralization of teeth resulting in tooth decay. Initially it starts as a small chalky white area. But as the disease advances, a large cavitation can be seen. The common symptom of dental caries is tooth ache, which is aggravated by heat or cold. It can also cause foul tastes and bad breath. Primary diagnosis of dental caries is by proper inspection of all teeth surfaces using a good light source and a dental mirror. Dental radiographs can be used to detect the lesion before they are visible to the naked eye. This condition can be treated by removing the decayed material from the tooth using a dental handpiece. Then the cavity is filled with restoration materials like dental amalgam, composite resin, porcelain or gold. In certain advanced cases root canal therapy is required, in which the pulp of the tooth is removed and is filled with a rubber-like material called gutta percha. Dental caries can be prevented by maintaining a good oral hygiene, which includes proper brushing and flossing daily
