How to avoid acne
acne care June 24th, 2010Acne is a common skin infection especially of the skin of face and neck caused predominantly by Propionibacterium acnes. It is a bacterium present in skin of face always but causes the infection acne now and then. The excess oil secretion mixed with dust and dirt from the environment clogs up the secretory pores of oil glands. This oil gets infected and the tissues get inflamed which presents as acne. Acneform lesions may be in the form of black and white comedones, boils, pustules or swelling. It is common in adolescent period since oil secretion is in excess at this time. It eventually heals without any intervention but may leave disfiguring scars especially when manipulated with fingers. Acne in adolescence should be differentiated from acne due to other causes like drug induced and hormonal disturbances. Increase in androgen levels has been implicated for the development of acne. Acne eruptions decrease in severity and number with increasing age. Frequent washing of face to prevent accumulation of oil and dirt, lessens acne. Severe form of acne- acne vulgaris can be treated using isotretinoin a vitamin A derivative. Steroids are used in refractory cases but the dose should be carefully monitored and tapered to prevent adverse effects.
